Warner Bros. has released the debut trailer for DC Studios’ upcoming Superman movie.
The two minutes and 22 seconds-long trailer provides a detailed look not only at David Corenswet’s Clark Kent / Superman, but Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. We also see a number of supporting superheroes, including Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.
Meanwhile, we get a look at Superman at his old-school best: saving an innocent child's life. On the other end of the scale, we see two of the huge monsters Superman goes up against in the movie: a firebreathing, skyscraper-sized kaiju, and an other-wordly tentacle monster that shoots energy beams.
But the star of the show is Krypto the Superdog, who rescues Superman from a surprisingly vulnerable position: battered, bruised, bleeding, and prone on a snowy surface. Superman whistles for Krypto, who comes running at super speed to his aid. Superman pushes his cape to Krypto’s nose and asks to be taken home.
In a Q&A with writer and director James Gunn attended by IGN, the DC Studios co-chief explained the thinking behind showing Superman in such a state in the film’s debut trailer.
“I think that was important to be able to see that he's up against something which can hurt him,” Gunn said. “And so to see him in a vulnerable moment there, you go, ‘Wow. Oh yeah.’ That is something that a lot of people see in the trailer, they're like, ‘Oh my gosh, I haven't seen that before. Oh, it’s a little blood coming out of his mouth. What the heck? Where's that coming from?’ "
Other moments of note in the trailer include what looks like an uprising by Superman supporters, an angry mob throwing things at Superman as he walks solemnly into a building, and the already established romantic relationship between Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane.
Superman hits theatres on July 11, 2025, and is the first film in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. IGN has an explainer on all the DC Heroes and Villains in the new trailer, comments from James Gunn on Krypto actually being a pretty terrible dog in the movie, thoughts on how Superman is about hope, and more.
