So, as the titles says, let's discuss the fight between Vilgefortz, the grand mage and Geralt of Rivia, one the greatest witchers of the saga. Now, tv series and books are different in terms of fight itself and communication they had before the fight. TV series has it all flashy and technically beatufil but book has it more brutal.

Let's start with the dialogue. In tv series, geralt drew sword right away he spotted vilgefortz, which made vilgefortz follow him by materializing long staff. Meanwhile in the book, Vilgefortz is doing his best to avoid the combat and manipulate geralt into giving away where Ciri is. Only and only when Geralt truly refuses to cooperate, vilgefortz materialized staff and told him:
"Your arrogance, Geralt. I will disabuse you of arrogance. And I will do so with the help of this magic staff here."
Geralt: "I’m trembling with impatience."

Here, the problem with Geralt is his supreme confidance that he can't lose a sword fight against a mage, that's just crazy to even think about it. However, Vilgefortz is not just a mage, he used to be a mercinary in the past, doing dirty jobs and has experience with combat. Not only that, Vilgefortz has a magic staff in his hand that is lighter and hits insanely hard (hard to parry). An addition to this, thanks to magic, whenever Geralt was about to kill him, somehow he managed to parry his lethal strike, as if moves faster than a normal human. It seems that he had a perfect combination of soldier skill, enchanted staff with magic and using magic itself with no words spoken to enhance his abilities and rival witcher's or even be more superior to him.

TL;DR, vilgefortz broke the shit of geralt, breaking his bones all over the place, making him vomit but still letting him live as a warning to all the others who dare oppose him.

This is how it's done in the tv series:

Thoughts? :)
