So far I have used three open source software, MyBB, phpBB, and SMF. Based on my experience SMF is the best open source forum management system. You can do almost everything through the Admin dashboard, thus making it very easy to use. Do you have nay experience with open source forum software, what do you think is the best software?

Proboard is a hosted solution and I have never been a fan of hosted forums. Well, Proboard is pretty nice but I do not want a forum on hosted solution. I like self hosted forums and I like to use open source r premium software. PHPbb is pretty versatile but it is also difficult to use.

MyBB has as many basic mods as XF and for free, but the problem is with MyAlerts and how difficult it is to make workable.

I think SMF is far better than MyBB. MyBB looks pretty basic, it is not even mobile responsive. I started using MyBB because it was comparatively easier than phpBB.

It seems like most SMF themes are not mobile responsive, though. There don't seem to be as many mobile responsive themes as phpBB, and with phpBB all of them are responsive. Has anyone noticed this?

And also, some things confuse me about SMF. For instance, many of the mods are called hooks. I don't really know what that means. What does it mean?

Anyway, though, as @Nomad is saying, you can do seemingly anything from the admin dashboard. That would be stuff like uploading mods, themes and also upgrading the software. It's all one-click. That's very useful for newbies who aren't as tech proficient yet.
