Do you approve registration manually on your forum?

I have some experiences where I have to wait for the owner of a forum to approve my registration before I can join the forum while in some, the registration was done automatically as I registered.

Do you manually approve registration or let any member join? What prompted your decision?

For one of my forums, I have to manually approve the registration because I was getting too much spam on there. It really helped me out! On the others I don't do that though because the software is more sophisticated and can weed out the majority of spammers from even signing up.
