If they give you an open cheque right now to write the amount of money you will need to call it quits to working and go into retirement permanently, how much are you going for? After taking that money, will you still be feeling like doing something like investments to make more money?

$100,000 would be enough for me to retire. anything less than that would not be enough for me.

There's really no figure set in stone. But if I have gotten to the age I'm supposed to retire, and I'm offered what is enough to cater for me and my family for the rest of my life, I'll gladly accept it.

First off you need to have your financial ducks in a row. You must have your home and vehicle(s) paid for. No credit card debts and have a steady income, pensions etc. If you have all of that you could retire with around $25,000 and from there try to save until you have about $50,000.
